“Live
each day well or write a book” – this an old Celtic slice of wisdom which I use
to sign off my blogs – to me it is a reminder that living a day well is easier
than writing a book. Novice writers take
notes. I am by no stretch of the
imagination a seasoned writer. My
expertise comes from slogging through the mire of learning the proverbial ropes
of the craft. I love to write – it is
without doubt one of my passions.
Writing defines me – the very act of stringing words together relaxes me
– brings me to a place of peace and of balance. In all of life’s lessons I am
the perennial student – always learning.
As
writers we can remain solitary or make the leap to go public. The minute you allow another set of eyes on
your written words you’ve made that jump - a tricky maneuver that carries
risks. If being published is your goal
please do not be faint of heart or without multiple plans. Writing the book will turn out to be the
easiest of your accomplishments. Finding
and agent and or a publisher can bring you to your knees. Rejection is part of the process but
difficult for the fragile writer’s ego.
Go toward your goal with no expectations. Consider your gift of writing an adventure and
embark on the journey with an open heart.
Now
take in another breath because promoting your book is the last leg of the
process. These days you must have a
working knowledge of the internet and all its social media highways. The days of sitting in a bookstore hoping to
sign books isn’t likely unless you find yourself on the A-list with your books
flying off the shelves. Seeking readers
around the globe who surf the net and buy online should be your target audience. Don’t be discouraged there are some awesome
folk out there in cyber space willing to work with you to make that dream you
had come true.

Linda Merlino is the author of Room of Tears (July 23 2013),Hudson Catalina(2008-Belly of the Whale & re-release 9/14/12), Swan Boat Souvenir (self-published 2003) she began writing fiction as a young mother on the sidelines of endless soccer practices. Linda wrote anytime any place. A manuscript filled a carton in the back seat of her car. Many years have passed since those early beginnings, but her work continues to be inspired by her children.
The author has a fascination with heroes and writes her fiction to honor ordinary men and women who react unselfishly in extraordinary circumstances. She extends her gratitude to all who keep us safe and free.
Her hometown is outside of Boston. She lived for many years in New York City and more recently calls Connecticut her home.
