Hope Tarr 315Ret_rounded_cornersAward-winning author, Hope Tarr earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Education before coming to grips with the tough truth: she wasn’t especially interested in analyzing people or teaching them. Hope is also a co-founder and current curator of Lady Jane’s Salon®, New York City’s first—and still only—monthly romance reading series now with satellites in eight U.S. states. The Romance Writers of America’s New York City chapter recently honored Hope as their 2013 Author of the Year. She lives in Manhattan with her real life romance hero and their feline family members. When not writing, she enjoys running, hiking, martial arts—and browsing restaurant menus.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life, Hope. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?

A: Hello and thanks so much for having me. I am the author of 25 historical and contemporary romance novels for multiple publishers, most recently my Entangled “Suddenly Cinderella” series. I sold my first book to Berkley/Jove back in 1999, so I’m coming up on 14 years in publishing—hard to believe!

Q: Can you please tell us about your book and why you wrote it?

A: The Suddenly Cinderella books (3 novels + one novella) are all based on the fairytale but with some fun, contemporary twists. Growing up, I ate, slept and breathed fairy tales, so having the chance to retell one of my favorites in the context of romance novels (fairy tales for grown up girls) was just too tempting to resist.

Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced writing it?

A: Balancing the tropes from the fairytale with keeping the stories fresh for readers. I wanted to fulfill readers’ expectations based on the fairytale and yet for them to not always necessarily know what was coming next. For example, having a wicked stepmother and stepsisters in each book would have been repetitive—and boring. The series finale, THE CINDERELLA SEDUCTION, does employ that plot device but the context is a resort real estate development company and the evil stepmother is a real estate broker.

Q: Do you have a press kit and what do you include in it? Does this press kit appear online and, if so, can you provide a link to where we can see it?

A: I have downloadable press photos and Facts at a Glance posted to my website at: http://hopetarr.com/media.html

Q: Have you either spoken to groups of people about your book or appeared on radio or TV? What are your upcoming plans for doing so?

A: Yes. I have spoken and continue to speak at national romance conferences held by the Romance Writers of American, RT BOOKReviews Magazine etc. In April, I will be the keynote speaker at my undergraduate alma mater for a Women in Leadership conference with a select attendance of just 100 female undergrad students, all selected or otherwise nominated by a faculty member from their department. I’m excited. I have done numerous radio (live and taped) interviews, both in-studio and call in. I have done a bit of TV and hope to do more this year, so stay “tuned.” J We are still working out my appearance schedule for this year, but readers can check my website Events page for in-person appearances. http://hopetarr.com/media.html. And of course I can be found on the first Monday of every month at Lady Jane’s Salon® (held at Madame X in Soho, NYC), the romance fiction series which I cofounded, co-curate and occasionally read at as an author.

Q: Do you have an agent and, if so, would you mind sharing who he/is is? If not, have you ever had an agent or do you even feel it’s necessary to have one?

A: Louise Fury of The Bent Agency.

Q: Did you, your agent or publisher prepare a media blitz before the book came out and would you like to tell us about it?

 A. For the Suddenly Cinderella Bundle pack, as well as for the individual titles within it, Entangled sets up a carefully curated blog tour with prizes. For the current one promoting the series bundle, the grand prize is a $50 Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift certificate. Readers can find my guest blog stops, including this one, listed at: http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/2014/01/10/virtual-book-tour-pump-up-your-book-presents-suddenly-cinderella-bundle-virtual-book-publicity-tour/

Q: Do you plan subsequent books?

A: The Suddenly Cinderella series has officially wrapped—for now. That said, writing is my “day job,” so I don’t imagine I’ll stop. I have a Regency-set historical releasing in March 2014 and the second in my FATE Series of hard cover erotic romances coming out in June 2014, so I’m being kept busy. J

Q: Thank you for your interview, Hope. Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and how everyone can buy your book?

A: Readers can find me at www.HopeTarr.com, www.LadyJaneSalonNYC.com, www.Twitter.com/HopeTarr, and www.Facebook.com/HopeC.Tarr. They can purchase the Suddenly Cinderella series, as a bundle or the individual books, wherever books are sold online: Kindle edition from Amazon.com Nook edition from Barnes+Noble Kobo edition iTunes edition All Romance eBooks edition
