Interview with Gulten Dye, author of 'Semi-Coma: Evolution of My Intermittent Consciousness'

Gulten Dye was born and raised in a small town in Turkey and moved with her family to Istanbul as a small child.  It was there that she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and worked as a nurse at a local hospital before moving to the Philippines with her boyfriend.

After being there a little over a year, they got married and a short while after that moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where she immediately began her studies to be able to work as a Registered Nurse. While studying for her boards, she was allowed to work as a scrub technician in an operating room at a nearby surgery center. She passed her boards and worked in an operating room for many years before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada there she worked at a busy University Medical Trauma Center as a staff nurse for several years until she earned the position of Charge Nurse.

By 2001, she was divorced and living with her two young sons.  Her desire to make more money became her impetus to start her own business, which soon became her sole source of income as her success grew.  She has never looked back.

Gulten found her talent and passion in creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and sold them to well-known people, such as Celine Dion, Rachel Ray and Mary Higgins Clark.  She became an international success when her work showed on Entertainment Tonight and Insider and was for sale in the high-end casinos in Las Vegas and on high-end cruise liners. She then created a jewelry line called Metamorphosis, a line of interchangeable jewelry that brought her even greater success.

Gulten is also an author and self- published her first book Semi Coma – Evolution of my Intermittent Consciousness in 2011, currently selling on all digital media as well as in hard copy.  Her second book “The Missing Link” is awaiting publication in 2013.

Interview

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, wed love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  Where did you come up with the idea to write your book?

I was on my way back from a one-week business trip from China and had just noticed two sharply-dressed, rather short, Chinese boys (probably brothers) who looked utterly happy beyond the point of any doubt. As they walked by me totally entangled in each other and their own conversation, you could easily see that their total presence in each other naturally blocked all others. Theirs was a singular universe, two in one, leaving all other peripheral things and people in this universe out of their existence. They passed my view very quickly, but the image of them and their confidence in themselves left a permanent foot print in my memory.

After getting on the plane and somewhat settling in my seat, my mind drifted to them again.  They were really short and not particularly handsome; yet, I knew they were extremely happy in that moment in my universe at that time anyway. I knew that for me to be really happy I would need to be “taller” than my 5 feet 7 inches self. There in that seat coming back to the United States in that long, dreaded flight, I was able to see the fallacy of my thinking. Those two boys were the kings of their own life, and unlike most of us in this lifetime, they knew it and no matter what you thought of them, you would not have been able to convince them otherwise.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

I think there is always a true decision point in any endeavor we undertake.  For me, that point was when a should became a must; then, it was easy to write my book. My biggest challenge was the physical act of writing since English is my second language and I am not the best speller on this planet; I had a hard time writing my book the old-fashion way, on a piece of paper with pen.  When I decided to utilize the computer to have the help of spell check, it became a minor setback.  I don't know how to type, so I wrote my book with one finger, one letter at a time. But as I said, the setbacks were minor once my decision was final and writing became a breeze for me.

The biggest tip I could pass on to anyone is don't let anything stand in your way of your desire to write a book.  Just start it, and everything else will take care of itself.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

I chose to start my own publishing company and self-publish.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

Yes, along the way of self-publishing, I realized how much I didn't know.  I must admit that the easiest part of the book was writing it for, at the time, I had no idea how to publish a book.

Just to let you know what an amateur I was on this subject, I will let you in on a little insight - I have gone through three editors to find the one I really love, and sometime during the editing process when she asked me who was going to do my layout, I was dumbfounded with the question since I had no idea what she was talking about.  What was a layout? I pondered.  Thank God, I am not shy or stupid, so I simply asked her what a layout was, and if she did it. After I found out that she didn't do layout work, I was in the market for a layout person, and it took me several months to find the right one who was aligned with my vision.

Another small hurtle to overcome was I had no clue how to set up a publishing company, or to get a ISBN Library of Congress number or had the slightest idea anything about self-publishing.  But, as with everything else in my life, my not knowing didn't stop me, and I learned all the answers to all my questions along the way.

Remember, you don't really have to know anything other than your destination for you can ask directions to any of your destinations along the way.  Just be clear about what is it that you want to do; everything else is just details.

Q: What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?

There are two books I have completed and am about to self-publish.  The first one is called Let the Magic Unfold, about my business which I came to embrace after my nursing career. Although its about my jewelry-making and designing, and selling it through long-established businesses, like Costco, and the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, and high-end cruiseliners like Crystal, and Reagent, and selling to celebrities like Celine Dion, and Rachael Ray, its also about overcoming many hurtles, such as bankruptcy, and self-doubt which made me stronger.  But, above all, its about my noticing how by living life from the point of finding the good in any situation and focusing on the positive side of everything, how it  helped me  become an establish business owner, more humble than ever before. It forcefully cracked open my heart to others and helped me discover that true triumph is never about the conventional success, but instead it is about the journey that it had me take.  I can easily say that through my jewelry creating, I found spirituality and my true connection to others.

The other one is a book of my poems which seem to flow out of me on an ongoing stream. I just wish I had more time to sit with myself to be able to write more of it. The poems are about life, love and light.

Q: Whats your favorite place to hang out online?

Reading book synopses on amazon and buying shiny gems for my jewelry designing.

Q: Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?

Self-reliance and management of our beautiful life.

Q: Thank you again for this interview!  Do you have any final words?

Yes, thank you for the opportunity for this interview.
