The gripping follow-up to Stonehill Downs

As the most valuable asset in the kingdom of Wilhaiim, Malachi Doyle has many responsibilities—protector, assassin, detective, and King Renault's right-hand man. And until he met Avani in the cursed village of Stonehill Downs, he believed he was the last of his kind: a magus who can communicate with the dead.

But Wilhaiim is left vulnerable when Mal and his page, Liam, are kidnapped and ferried across the Long Sea to a warring kingdom in search of its own magus. To make matters worse, a springtime plague is rapidly spreading, and beneath the earth the sidhe are preparing for war. With Mal missing and presumed dead, Avani reluctantly takes his place as Wilhaiim's magus. But her powers are unreliable and untested, her many allies are treacherous, and she is certain Mal is alive. Will she be able to keep Wilhaiim—and herself—safe?

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life, Sarah Remy. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?

A:  Thanks for having me! In 1994 I earned a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from Pomona College in California. Since then I’ve been employed as a receptionist at a high-powered brokerage firm, managed a boutique bookstore, read television scripts for a small production company, and, more recently, worked playground duty at the local elementary school, but through it all I’ve never stopped writing, usually in the scifi and fantasy genre.

I likes my fantasy worlds gritty, my characters diverse and fallible, and I don’t believe every protagonist deserves a happy ending.

Before joining the Harper Voyager family, I published with EDGE, Reuts, and Madison Place Press.

I’m a California native who has lived in Washington State with for the last fifteen years. In my spare time I ride horses and rehab my old home. I can talk to you endlessly about Sherlock Holmes, World of Warcraft, and backyard chicken husbandry, and I’ve been a member of one of Robin Hobb’s longest-running online fan clubs since 2002.

Q: Can you please tell us about your book and why you wrote it?

A: Across the Long Sea is the second volume in the Malachi and Avani Series. This time around we find Mal kidnapped, stolen away by a war-torn nation in need of secret weapon. With Mal missing and presumed dead, Avani reluctantly takes his place as Wilhaiim’s magus and struggles with both her unreliable magic and a growing citywide plague.

Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced writing it?

A:  The most difficult part of writing anything is finding the time to put words on paper. By the time the time I sit down in the evening to write I’m tired. I work a day job and I have two teenage children. Life is busy and most of the time I’d rather retire with a nice glass of wine and a good book after dinner. Instead I write. It’s a challenge to stay disciplined, but one that becomes easier along the way.

Q: Have you either spoken to groups of people about your book or appeared on radio or TV?  What are your upcoming plans for doing so?

A:  I’ve spoken at Emerald City Comicon and I’ll be at NYCC in October. I’ve been appeared in Minerava Magazine, in Spokane Woman Magazine, and I’ve been interviewed by several podcasts.

Q: Do you have an agent and, if so, would you mind sharing who he/she is?  If not, have you ever had an agent or do you even feel it’s necessary to have one?

A:  I don’t have an agent at this time. I don’t think it’s necessary to have an agent in this day and age, but it does definitely make things easier if you’re not familiar with the publishing process. I run a small press so am used to doing business on my own.

Q: Do you plan subsequent books?

A:  Yes. I’m hoping to write at least one more in the Malachi and Avani series.

Q: Thank you for your interview, Sarah.  Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and how everyone can buy your book?

A: Definitely. You can find me online at MadisonPlacePress.com, on Twitter as @sarahremywrites, and on Tumblr. You can purchase Across the Long Sea from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or directly through HaperCollins.
