Can
you please tell us about you book and why you wrote it?
The title per se is a misnomer. Telling how
to abort the current Crohn’s disease epidemic is but the icing on a darker
story. The book is about discovering why a new disease suddenly appeared and
then grew into a global epidemic affecting millions of individuals. Embedded in
book is how, when confronted with an apparent hazard to the public welfare,
agencies within the federal government acted contrary to the mandate of the
Congress and protect agribusiness from possible economic disruption of their
commerce rather than seeking answers that would achieve nearly the same end.
Being actively engaged in research involving the presumed etiological agent,
the book is autobiographical, yet tells the story of others who fought in order
that an inconvenient truth be told.
The answer as to why has two parts: 1) having known
individuals whose lives and careers were radically altered by Crohn’s disease
(Crohn’s disease is a destroyer of lives) and 2) being a Trekkie in quest of
why the sudden emergence of this new disease and why it had attain epidemic
proportions on a global scale.
What
were some of the biggest challenges you faced writing it?
My
“displeasure” that economics triumphs over the public welfare and dealing with
vested third parties that “sinned by silence” in the face of destructive
“collateral damage.”
Do
you plan subsequent books?
Probably.
A non-scientific book entitled Roots in
the Circles was also published in 2015.
When
did you begin writing?
During my
medical internship. The dairy kept became the basis for my first nonscientific
book, Bellevue Diary.
What
is your greatest strength as an author?
Concern
for the subject matter.
Did
writing this book teach you anything.
Those
Third Parties can apparently exercise policy that runs contrary to the public
welfare with impunity.
